Official Statement from ELOI on the Detention of our Executive Director, Pastor Steven Tendo

It is with heavy hearts and deep concern that we speak to our partners, supporters, and the global community regarding the arrest and continued detention of our Executive Director, Pastor Steven Tendo, in the United States of America.

Pastor Steven Tendo has been residing in the United States as an asylum seeker, faithfully and diligently complying with every legal requirement asked of him. He attended every scheduled check-in with immigration authorities without fail, and conducted himself at all times as a man of integrity, faith, and service to his community.

On 4th February 2026, Pastor Steven was unexpectedly detained in a raid at his workplace, just two days before a scheduled routine check-in appointment. Since then, he has remained in custody in Dover, New Hampshire, despite having honoured every obligation placed upon him.

This moment has shaken our organisation deeply. Yet in the midst of this pain, we have been moved and sustained by the extraordinary outpouring of support, solidarity, prayers, and encouragement from friends, partners, and well-wishers across Uganda, the United States, and beyond. We are profoundly grateful. Your love reminds us that Pastor Steven does not stand alone.

All verified updates regarding Pastor Steven’s situation will be communicated through his official website. We urge the public to rely only on that platform for accurate information.

As we navigate this difficult season, the leadership and staff of ELOI remain steadfast in our mission. We continue to serve communities across Uganda through our programmes in health, education, access to justice, environmental stewardship, and climate action, because that is what Pastor Steven would want. His life’s work has always been rooted in the belief that every human being deserves dignity, care, and opportunity, and we will not waver from that calling.

We ask that you continue to keep Pastor Steven, his family, and the entire ELOI family in your thoughts and prayers. Justice will prevail.
