Introduction: The Reality of Release When we advocate for New Americans at ELOI Inc., we are fighting against a system that routinely criminalizes the legal right to seek asylum. When immigrants arrive in the US, those who legally apply for immigration relief are mostly incarcerated in detention centers, jails, or prisons run by ICE. But what happens on the day they are finally released? Or what happens when their allowed time living at an immigrant shelter expires?
The Vulnerability of the Streets Release from detention should be a moment of relief, but it is often met with renewed panic. Without immediate support, individuals who have already survived institutional racism and trauma are thrust into homelessness.
- Working at the Southern Border: ELOIM is deeply connected and works with grassroots organizations at the Southern border of the USA, where the need is enormous.
- Strict Vetting: We make sure that the individuals we support have gone through the right channels and have been fully inspected by the authorities. Our work starts directly with the individual from the time they are introduced to us.
