Confronting Inequity inside Our Borders

As we celebrate Nelson Mandela International Day and reflect on the call to combat poverty and inequity, we must turn a clear-eyed gaze toward systemic injustices inside the United States. For thousands of New Americans arriving at our borders to exercise their legal right to seek asylum, the system they encounter is often punitive and deeply isolating. Many are placed into a vast matrix of corporate, profit-driven detention centers and local jails run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Exposing Institutional Racism and Neglect

Inside these isolated facilities, asylum seekers face severe structural barriers designed to break down their legal resolve:

• Systemic Legal Isolation: Detainees are frequently transferred across state lines without warning, separating them from family support networks and cutting off access to legal counsel. This deliberate displacement makes navigating complex federal courts incredibly difficult.
• Severe Medical Neglect: Within these localized detention networks, minority immigrants bear the brunt of institutional racism and medical neglect. The denial of standard, routine healthcare for chronic conditions and pregnant women violates basic human rights standards.

ELOI’s Role: Advocacy and Structural Accountability

ELOI Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that refuses to accept the criminalization of families fleeing persecution. As dedicated policy advocates and campaigners, we work to protect civil rights and hold these systems accountable. We partner with legal aid coalitions to document conditions inside regional facilities, demand strict compliance with due process protections, and advocate for human-centered legal alternatives. We believe it is still in our hands to build a justice system that treats every person with fundamental fairness, freedom, and dignity.
