Introduction: A Radical Shift in Recovery
Reflecting on this week’s International Youth Day theme of “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”, ELOI Inc. applies this global lens to a devastating domestic crisis: the epidemic of youth substance abuse in the United States.
The traditional American post-rehabilitation model is heavily clinical and often highly isolating. When a young adult finishes detox, they are frequently sent right back into the same geographic environment and social circles that triggered their addiction. The relapse rates are staggering because the individual’s context hasn’t changed, and they lack a profound sense of forward-looking purpose.
Bridging the Context Gap
We believe that true healing requires a complete reconstruction of identity. We offer recovering American youth an epic, purpose-driven alternative to standard outpatient care: integrating them into self-sponsored volunteer service trips to Uganda, East Africa.
For periods spanning 3 to 12+ months, these young adults step entirely out of their American context and embed themselves within our Ugandan field operations. They discover that despite vastly different backgrounds, their aspirations to build a meaningful, sustainable future are perfectly aligned with the Ugandan youth they work alongside.

The Power of Being Needed
Instead of dwelling on their past mistakes, these young adults are put to work. They help distribute scholastic materials to the 516 students in our Bursary Scheme. They plant native trees to combat climate change. They help install clean water infrastructure. In doing so, they realize their inherent value. They are no longer defined as “addicts in recovery”; they are capable global citizens.
