Introduction: Beyond the Clinical Environment
Aligning with this week’s UN theme of “Healing through Memory”, ELOI Inc. addresses the national epidemic of youth substance abuse in the United States by reframing how young adults heal from past trauma and addiction. Traditional recovery programs often isolate individuals in clinical settings, focusing heavily on past failures without offering a clear, constructive vision for the future.
When a young adult exits primary rehabilitation, returning to the same environment often triggers relapse. Lasting sobriety requires a complete shift in context, environment, and personal purpose.
The Service-Driven Recovery Model
We offer young adults in recovery a transformative path forward: engaging in hands-on, long-term volunteer service within our grassroots programs in East Africa.

Transforming Experience into Action
For periods ranging from 3 to 12 months, young adults in recovery work alongside our Ugandan team:
- Educational Support: Assisting with material distribution and tracking outcomes for the 516 students in our Bursary Scheme.
- Community Infrastructure: Participating in clean water installations and school stove construction projects.
- Environmental Stewardship: Working directly in our community tree nurseries and agroforestry sites.
By redirecting their focus toward tangible global utility, participants process past struggles not through isolation, but through active service. They return home with restored self-worth, practical skills, and a strong foundation for lifelong sobriety.
