Instead of open arms, they are met with detention centers, institutional racism, and a justice system that is complex and overwhelming. This is where their new trauma often begins.
At ELOI Inc., we believe this is a betrayal of the American promise. As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, we are committed to challenging this injustice and defending the human rights of every person who comes to this nation seeking safety.
A Fight Born from Experience
Our mission is deeply personal. Our founder, a human rights activist from Uganda, came to the U.S. legally seeking asylum after being detained and tortured for his pro-democracy work. Instead of finding sanctuary, he was detained in Texas for over two years, where his health deteriorated and he nearly lost his eyesight due to neglect.
His story is a powerful testament to the suffering that occurs within the system, and it is the driving force behind our work. We know what is at stake because we have lived it.
How We Provide Support
We work with grassroots organizations, particularly at the southern border, to identify and support individuals who have been fully vetted by authorities and are in genuine need. Our work is hands-on, starting from the moment a person is introduced to us.
Through our Access To Justice program, we partner with other organizations to strengthen the quality of legal interventions and advocate for fair, inclusive monitoring of the system. We hold the powerful to account and fight to make the USA a fairer, more equal place for our newest neighbors.
